HSE Takes Strict Action against Construction Sites Flouting Rules
In the recent past, the UK has witnessed death and injury to many workers in construction sites due to the carelessness in implementing safety measures. According to the HSE, over half of the incidents caused at such sites involved workers in the refurbishment sector. To ensure that the sector complies with necessary safety regulations, the HSE has launched a drive to target contractors who are found to be careless towards employee safety.

As part of the drive, the HSE officials have inspected fifty-eight sites, of which fifteen have been served notices. Rob Hirst, the HSE spokesperson, says that the organisation has tried to take strict action in response to the high rate of incidents in the sector. However, he also expressed satisfaction at the fact that the majority of sites were found to be following the guidelines. Mr. Hirst stressed that it was better to tackle the problem beforehand rather than taking care of its consequences later.
The HSE inspectors’ enquiry was directed at finding out whether several specific precautions that are expected from constructions sites were being followed at the sites or not. These included:
- identification of jobs involving work at a dangerous height and
- appropriate precautions for the same correct installation and use of equipment
- proper risk management for exposure to asbestos
- risk management training for employees
The HSE is justifiably worried about the high rate of deaths in the construction sector but the effectiveness of the initiative will only become clear once the inspection drive is over and sites resume to normal business. Unless the impact of the drive is sustainable, the concerns in the sector will remain.
